I will clarify the different metaphysical pictures behind spacetime functionalism and argue that functionalism is an interesting and viable epistemologicalposition but is more problematic as ametaphysical view. Indeed, although spacetime functionalism provides an answer to the problem of empirical coherence (as has been argued by Lam and W\u00fcthrich, manuscript) it fails to provide a comprehensive account of spacetime emergence. By drawing a comparison to the philosophy of mind, I will show that when applied to spacetime emergence, the functionalist strategy comes in different flavors, each entailing a different metaphysical picture of the world. Therefore, it does not offer a solution to the hard problem of spacetime, which is to interpret the nature of the relation obtaining between spacetime roles and spacetime realizers (in the functionalist framework). Elle s&rsquo;oppose \u00e0 deux conceptions alternatives: le pr\u00e9sentisme, \u00e9non\u00e7ant que seules les entit\u00e9s pr\u00e9sentes existent, et le non-futurisme, th\u00e8se selon laquelle seules les entit\u00e9s pass\u00e9es et pr\u00e9sentes existent. L&rsquo;\u00e9ternalisme implique une forme exotique d&rsquo;\u00e9ternit\u00e9 : toute entit\u00e9, aussi \u00e9ph\u00e9m\u00e8re soit-elle et quelle que soit sa localisation dans le temps, existe relativement \u00e0 toute autre localisation temporelle. Nous d\u00e9fendrons premi\u00e8rement l&rsquo;\u00e9ternalisme en exhibant les difficult\u00e9s r\u00e9dhibitoires du pr\u00e9sentisme et du non-futurisme. Le pr\u00e9sentisme, une th\u00e8se intuitive au premier abord, doit faire face \u00e0 de s\u00e9v\u00e8res difficult\u00e9s pour expliquer les v\u00e9rit\u00e9s \u00e0 propos du pass\u00e9. Quant \u00e0 la th\u00e8se non-futuriste, elle pr\u00eate le flan \u00e0 une objection sceptique : comment savons-nous que nous sommes pr\u00e9sents, si le pass\u00e9 est tout aussi r\u00e9el que le pr\u00e9sent ? Dans une seconde partie, nous examinerons bri\u00e8vement de quelle mani\u00e8re l&rsquo;\u00e9ternalisme pourrait \u00eatre amend\u00e9 \u00e0 l&rsquo;aune d&rsquo;une affirmation que l&rsquo;on trouve sous la plume de certains physiciens, \u00e0 savoir que, fondamentalement, le temps n&rsquo;existe pas. La disparition du temps est-elle compatible avec la th\u00e8se \u00e9ternaliste ? Courses numbered BST-110 and above assume either familiarity with earlier mini-courses, or philosophy and metaphysics of science.<\/p>\n<p>In this course a non-technical philosophical introduction to the possible emergence of spacetime from non-spatio-temporal entities is presented. According to several research programs in quantum gravity, spacetime emerges from entities that are not, in some interesting sense, spatio-temporal. In this lecture, we propose to take a step back from physics to develop a better understanding of the possible ontological interpretations of this claim.
